Vanessa Ewt lives by a simple motto: “Acta non verbe”– that is, “Deeds, not words.” And, one look into the life and service of Ms. Ewt displays a woman who gets things done in a major way. Vanessa serves with PMSC AmeriCorps as an Interventionist at Laurel View Elementary in the Ligonier Valley School District, helping learners face tough academic, social, emotional, and behavioral challenges each and everyday. Though Ewt says she came into her position 3 years ago through “happenstance,” it is clear to see that she is in not at Laurel View by accident! Each and everyday, Vanessa brings out the very best of America–serving the students in ways to meet their individual and unique needs; Ewt meets a critical need for Laurel Valley learners, especially as they succeed through the challenges in the wake of the global pandemic.
In addition to meeting critical needs in academics, Vanessa Ewt raises the bar for her learners socially and emotionally. Taking the AmeriCorps spirit of service to the next level, Ewt leads her school in events such as, “First Responders Day” when she challenged learners to learn about and appreciate those who risk their lives each day to care for our nation. Rising above the standard, Vanessa adapted a special learning opportunity through the Amercan Red Cross called “Pedro.” Ewt reported, “While they offered a program, I adapted to the needs of the learners. FEMA offers free booklets that go along with the program and they receive a certificate of completion along with a card to fill out their own Emergency Plan’s for their home.” Taking the initiative to meet the specific needs of her learners, Vanessa Ewt displayed her life motto to the fullest extent.
When it comes to commitment, service, and humility–Vanessa Ewt sets the standard for all future PMSC AmeriCorps members. Ewt reports, “I strive to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for my learners and show them, Acta Non Verbe. I work hard for them and myself, and I believe because of that I have grown to be a better leader and community servant.” With a heart for service and genuine love for her learners and community, it isn’t hard to see why Vanessa Ewt does it all to, “Bring out the best of America.”
