When Barbara Buzzelli and LeeAnn Krumenacker saw an opportunity to provide additional support to the children and families of Central Cambria School District, they teamed up and went into action! As Central Cambria Elementary School’s PMSC AmeriCorps members, the duo saw a “gap in academics and social/emotional learning among students” in their district. So, like all the best PMSC AmeriCorps members, Buzzelli and Krumenacker didn’t just notice a challenge, they knew they could be the ones to address it. In August, Buzzelli will finish her 3rd term and Krumenacker her 1st term as AmeriCorps members, but it was serving together through Summer 2022 that solidified them as “a great team!”
To address the challenges facing their learners, the duo brainstormed “Summer Academy 2022.” Knowing they would need support to make the Academy a success, they galvanized other AmeriCorps members across their district as well as local high school students seeking service hours. As a dynamic team, they hosted “Habitudes” Camp, focused on leadership and social-emotional learning; STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) Camp in partnership with St. Francis University’s ROCK program; “Dungeons and Dragons” Camp, where campers faced challenges in math, reading, creative thinking, and teamwork; “Choose Love” Camp focusing on the power of forgiveness, courage, gratitude, and compassion in action; and, “Camp Read-a-Lot,” so that campers could “get outside in nature while building their literacy skills.” Krumenacker and Buzzelli saw their campers thrive this summer, “seeing how some of the children we work with have overcome their own fears and academic obstacles through working with their peers.”
There is simply no doubt that Barbara Buzzelli and LeeAnn Krumenacker came to Get Things Done for Central Cambria, Pennsylvania, and America. When faced with the option to complain about challenges or do something to address them, this dynamic-duo displayed what it means to “Bring Out the Best of America!”
Thank you, Barbara Buzzelli and LeeAnn Krumenacker for your imaginative spirit of service that embodies what it truly means to serve as Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps AmeriCorps Members.
