PMSC AmeriCorps Members Maddie Shaw and Senda Harvey lent a helping hand at this year’s distribution project. Their smiling faces reflect the magic that was created during this special time of giving.
Last year in our region, 955 families and 2,300 children were served with holiday cheer and more importantly- TOYS!!!! Families from Blair, Cambria, Indiana, and Jefferson counties were served and PMSC AmeriCorps Members couldn't have been more eager to show up and support the mission. Spreading good tidings, one toy at a time.

PMSC Member Highlight
New PMSC member Addison Kelble is already experiencing the rewarding feeling that comes with serving as an AmeriCorps member. Addison is serving in Pittsburgh with Three Rivers Waterkeeper. Some of her time is spent enjoying the outdoors conducting ecological surveys of plants, animals, and macroinvertebrates. Her work in this data collection will allow organizations like Three Rivers Waterkeeper to identify pollution and pollution sources to ultimately clean the land and waterways for future generations to continue to enjoy.
Addison heard about the opportunities with AmeriCorps through her partner, who served with the Boys and Girls Club, and said how much of a great experience it was. So far, it seems like Addison is having the same experience. When asked about her AmeriCorps time serving this far, she shared, “I have loved getting to continue my work with 3RWK and working with a passionate and intelligent group of people. I have found my time serving so rewarding, and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings.”
After AmeriCorps, Addison would like to continue working in the environmental non-profit field, especially in the Pittsburgh region with such unique and diverse ecosystems. Plus, the view from the field is pretty awesome too!

Brady Blackburn is using his AmeriCorps experience, academic background, and future career goals to guide his journey of service!
In the spring of 2023, Brady was introduced to AmeriCorps through the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, an organization he encountered through his studies at IUP. This interested him enough to become PMSC AmeriCorps member during the summer of 2023, serving at WPC. From that point, his interests converged into his master’s thesis- studying the interaction of fish communities and culverts. With Brady’s connection to WPC, their data, and his studies, he was able to successfully complete his Biology M.S. degree. He is again serving with WPC and PMSC for a larger term to continue his relationship with WPC and grow in his career field. When asked how his time with AmeriCorps shaped his future plans, Brady responded with, “This program has also shown me a whole new avenue to pursue in the realm of ecology that I didn’t even know existed. I am now passionate about pursuing a career with a conservation oriented non-profit and giving back to communities and ecosystems wherever I am.”

Throughout the country, people are serving communities with AmeriCorps. New PMSC member, Sarah Lynch, is serving a different community through her second AmeriCorps position, but first term with PMSC!
Before becoming a PMSC member serving at the Portage Elementary School, Sarah was serving communities in Texas, Missouri, and Colorado through NCCC. While she is currently doing academic interventions, read more about what Sarah’s duties were before coming to PMSC.
“I worked with a group of 10 corps members and 1 corps leader. We traveled to Texas for the first 6 weeks and worked with Habitat for Humanity. We helped those that were affected by the hurricane by rebuilding their houses and making the foundation stronger. Then we traveled to Missouri to help the Disability office with building ramps and porches for those disabled and can't use the stairs. We traveled to Montrose Colorado where we conducted surveys at the local businesses and working with the habitat for humanity build houses. We volunteered some time to help watch kids and work at the Habitat for Humanity resale store (just a few examples of what we volunteered). We traveled within our region to help build houses from the foundation up to finished houses for Habitat for Humanity.”
